Whilst studying in the past I found myself living in less than desirable homes and garages, without gardens or inspiring settings, a functional kitchen or furniture. In 2oo3 I terminated my Digital Design studies at Griffith Uni to work and travel. On my return in 2oo4 I set about buying a home in the Lismore area, so when I returned to studying I could live comfortably and be inspired. Since then I have completed Permaculture and Landscape Design studies and look forward to further developing the gardens.
energy:ten charlton is powered by green energy. With massive price hikes in power and water that current rental levels cannot sustain, tenants are encouraged to be mindful of their usage at ALL times. Taking simple measures such as: 5 minute showers, rugging up before having to feel the need to turn power guzzling heaters on, switching computers and appliances off at the wall after use, switching lights off in rooms not being used, adjusting the load size switch when washing, reporting drippy taps... |
gardens:Growing fruit and vegetables in the back yard is a brilliant way for the individual to develop appreciation for food value, form a relationship with the plant kingdom and contribute in a small way to food security. This can be the first and most profound step to living a more sustainbable, healthy and conscious life. There's a long list of edibles that now grow at ten charlton and I encourage tenants to enjoy the gardens and eat the mangoes, paw-paws...when in season! |
cleaning products:
Whilst living at ten charlton it's encouraged that you endeavor to use those products least harmful to the environment. |
buy local:
There are farmers markets on every Saturday morning and organic markets on every Tuesday just around the corner at the showgrounds in North Lismore. Between these two markets, the house hold can be supplying its food needs with predominantly locally grown produce. Best of all for the struggling student, prices are mostly much better at the markets and come with a genuine smile. |
